ICLI Events Timeline Highlights: December 2016 to January 2017
NOVEMBER 30TH ONWARD:
On-going – Every Monday, Sisters Halaqah held in Urdu to review tafseer of Quran.
Every Thursday, Sisters Halaqah held in Urdu to review, tajweed, hadith, Arabic grammar.
Every Saturday, Sisters Halaqah held in English to review tajweed, tafseer, hadith.
Every Saturday from 12/10-1/21, Women’s Self Defense Classes held at ICLI
Every Alternate Friday – Cub Scouts and Girls Scouts met with their respective leaders
Every Sunday, Adult Education Program organized by Azhar Bhatt and Imran Zaidi.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday – Quran classes offered by Sr. Samina Qureshi for young boys and girls in order to recognize all Arabic letters and recite Quran with proper pronunciation. Those who complete Quran move on to Hifz program, memorization of whole Quran, with Hafiz Adil.
Over a hundred blanket donations to various churches on Long Island including Long Island Council of Churches and St. Brigid’s Church.
December 1 – Open forum for post-election jitters held at ICLI with the leadership of Nassau County Police Department to discuss mechanisms for the safety and security of local residents. This event was coordinated by Dr. Isma Chaudhry and Rabbi Michael White from Temple Sinai of Roslyn.
December 4 – General Body meeting to discuss overview of 2016 from Executive Committee including a financial, weekend school, and building project update. Q & A was available to the membership along with a discussion regarding goals for the New Year.
December 7 – Sr. Seemi Ahmed spoke about Islam and Islamophobia on a panel organized by “Long Island Together” at the Port Washington Library.
December 11 – Sr. Seemi Ahmed was a panelist for a program “Islam, Christianity, and Judaism – Similarities & Differences” held at Molloy College by The Institute of Interfaith Dialogue.
December 11 – Long Island Meet and Greet organized by Sr. Nadia Pervez. Over 100 participants from Nassau County attended.
December 11 & 18 – ICLI Youth held “ICLI Mist Interest Meetings” where youth of the community discussed plans for the annual MIST Tournament held in the city.
December 15 – ICLI held a “gold sponsorship” in Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby’s 15th Annual Kwanza Celebration. Habeeb Ahmed attended.
December 16 – Sr. Seemi Ahmed was a panelist at “The Living Memories Project Conference” on Crisis in Faith panel at the Suffolk Y JCC.
December 16 – Sr. Noreen Kazi organized a trip to the ice skating center in Oyster Bay for the Youth Committee. It was well attended by Sunday School parents and students.
December 16 – ICLI held a Craft Night on D.I.Y Infinity Scarf class with designer and artist Nida Mirza.
December 23 – Habeeb Ahmed and other ICLI community member went to Bethlehem Judeas Church to hand out gifts, blankets and food.
December 25 – ICLI hosted a soup kitchen at United Methodist Church in Westbury. Members of the community helped feed poor people, serve, clean, and set up tables night before. Blankets and groceries were also distributed.
December 25 – ICLI Youth Group held a “Cards and Convos.” Event where 40+ cards were made for children in NUMC and Stony Brook Medical University.
December 27 – On behalf of the ICLI Youth Committee, Sabrina Khan and Hana Baig went and distributed gift bags and cards to children in NUMC for the holidays
January 10 – Habeeb Ahmed spoke at Nassau County Commission on Human Rights Bias Crime Vigilance in the Ceremonial Chambers which was held by County Executive Edward Mangano to intensify efforts of fighting bias cases by educating the public, and reading out to those who feel that they have been victims of a bias incident.
January 11 – Youth group and members of EC meet with a contractor for the basketball court flooring.
January 15 – To save Obama Care, members from the community and ICLI gathered at the, “Yes We Can Community Center” and rallied for the cause.
January 15 – Sr. Seemi Ahmed gave invocations and Dr. Isma Chaudhry was a guest speaker at the 32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ecumenical Service at the Antioch Baptist Church. Members of the ICLI community attended.
January 15 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry hosted a group of students from the Unitarian Universalist to discuss with them the concepts of Islam and have them observe salah.
January 15 – ICLI’s Weekly Adult Education Program scheduled to discuss on the “Quranic Discourse on Human Embryonic Development” by Dr. Ahmad Mutee Siddiqi and the Prophet’s Seerah with Ustadh Ekram Haque.
January 16 – Habeeb Ahmed and other ICLI community members attended the 24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade by United Peoples’ organization at the Miracle Christian Center.
January 16 –Dr. Isma Chaudhry was the luncheon chair at The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 32nd Annual Scholarship Award Luncheon at the Marriot Hotel. Habeeb Ahmed and ICLI members attended the event.
January 17 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry represented ICLI by attending an interfaith study discussing Abrahamic scriptures at the Garden City Jewish Center.
January 22 – ICLI’s Weekly Adult Education program scheduled to discuss Retirement Planning with speaker Jamal Mohsin and to continue the study of, “Forty Hadeeth” of Imam Nawawi with Mufti Farhan.

January 26 – “Women’s Rights in Islam” at the Transition Network Manhattan (Dr. Kausar Zaman)
January 27 – Women’s Healing Event which was held at ICLI was open to all communities, races, ethnicities and religions to come and share their concerns about divisiveness in our world and identify where we can help and inspire change. (Dr Isma Chaudhry)
January 31 – Interfaith panel discussion on Islam and the “golden rule” at Garden City Jewish Center (Dr. Isma Chaudhry)
February 7 – Interfaith panel at Jericho Jewish Center (Dr. Isma Chaudhry)
February 8 – Interfaith panel at Unitarian Universalist at Shelter Rock (Dr. Isma Chaudhry)
February 10 – Members from Central Synagogue from Port Washington visited ICLI to learn about Islam and show support to Muslims. They also observed the Jummah Salah. (Interfaith Committee)
February 15- Community forum at WHS on political climate and the vulnerable communities
February 17- Westbury board of education meeting at ICLI. (Dr. Faroque Khan and members of ICLI)
February 19 – Children of Adam Youth Conference was held at ICLI with the theme of “Building a community: the city of Medina”.
February 21 – Introduced ICLI youth activities at NYU students event. (Dr. Kausar Zaman)
Same Day – Dr. Hala Ubaid hosted an interfaith study group in Garden city.
February 26 – ICLI’s 14th Annual Black History Month Celebration (Sr. Zainab Bey)
February 27 – ICLI @ “Daughters of Abraham”–chapter in Manhattan (Dr. Kausar Zaman)
March 1- Westbury Synagogue Group hosted at ICLI (Dr. Isma Chaudhry)
March 1- Dr. Kausar Zaman helped form a Shalom Salam Chapter in Long Island in
March 3 – 20-30 students from Hofstra visited ICLI for Islamic awareness week. They observed the Isha prayer and learned about Islam. (Sr. Seemie Ahmed and members of Interfaith Committee)
March 7 – St. Brigid’s Church honors Habeeb Ahmed at their Annual Dinner. Board members of ICLI attend to show support.
March 9 – Breaking Bread: An Interfaith Dialogue Temple Beth David Commack (Dr. Isma Chaudhry)
March 12 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry keynote at women of Distinction awards Town of North Hempstead
March 13 – Dr. Kausar Zaman spoke at Appna Alliance women forum about ICLI’s funeral services and importance of ICLI membership.
March 19 – Interfaith Event at Central Synagogue Beth Emeth Rockville Center (Sr. Nadia Pervez and Interfaith Committee members)
March 22 – The Westbury Arts Council held a henna painting night at ICLI from 7-9pm on March 22nd, 2017. The Arts Council members had henna designs done on their hands by ICLI members. They also learned about Islam and observed the Isha prayer.
March 25 – “tell us about Islam” at Congregation Shaaray Shalom, Conservative egalitarian congregation (Dr. Isma Chaudhry)
March 29 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry honored at Nassau County Comptroller’s event “Women breaking Ground Celebration”

Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat – Quran classes offered by Sr. Samina Qureshi
Weekend School – held on Saturdays and Sundays for students age 3 – 18.
Sunday – Adult Education program – first segment community issues are discussed, second segment – religious lessons presented.
March 31 – ICLI hosted students from St. Joseph’s college. Dr. Isma Chaudhry discussed how Islam views other Abrahamic faiths. Guests observed Jummah salah and discussed rituals of prayer and Islam.
April 2 – Islam 101 at Manhasset Congregational Church (Dr. Isma Chaudhry).
April 18 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry hosted and presented a talk on how hadith fill in for the Quran to students who are studying tafseer at SUNY Old Westbury.
April 19 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry acknowledged as one of Long Island’s 50 Most Influential People of 2016 at the 14th Annual Power List Celebration. This award was presented to her two years in a row – 2015 & 2016.
April 20 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry hosted and presented a talk to students from SUNY Old Westbury studying the similarities and differences between Islam and Christianity.
April 21 – ICLI received Rabbi and his congregation from Temple Beth-El who visited our center to observe Jummah salaah and show their solidarity to the Muslim community.
April 21 – Youth Group – potluck dinner for 40-50 students
April 22 – Girls Scouts Earth Day – Sr. Seema Rahman and Br. Habeeb Ahmed helped the girls plant flowers on ICI campus.
April 22 – 3rd Annual Spring Family Dinner – program included keynote speaker, Mufti Mohammad Farhan, six community members recognized for their contributions to the local community and presented the Asim Munawer Memorial Award, special entertainment for children and comedian Azhar Usman.
April 28 – Dr. Irfan Amin, Dr. Safdar Chadda, Br. Habeeb Ahmed along with other members of board and community visited Temple Beth-El to show support to our Jewish brothers and sisters against the recent rise of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Dr. Isma Chaudhry spoke on the Islamic perspective of interfaith bonds between communities.
April 28 – Youth Committee Game Night – Dodgeball tournament (Sr. Noreen Kazi & Br. Amin Khwaja).
May 1 – Drs. Qamar & Kausar Zaman, Dr. Isma Chaudhry and Br. Habeeb Ahmed attended a meeting at the Nassau County Police Department to discuss how to streamline security around ICLI campus during month of Ramadan.
May 3 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry gave talk on Islamophobia at Hofstra University MSA hosted event.
May 4 – Members of ICLI attended a unity and anti-hate rally, “Not In Our Town” arranged by the Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Holocaust Memorial Center. Dr. Isma Chaudhry said a few words on Islamophobia.
May 6 – Sr. Seemi Ahmed was honored at the 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Nassau Alumnae Chapter) for her accomplishments and significant contributions in community involvement.
May 9 – Dr. Isma Chaudhry presented talk on Islam 101 to students at Chaminade High School.
May 12 – Quranic Classes Graduation
May 13 – Weekend School Teacher’s Appreciation Luncheon arranged by Sr. Noreen Kazi. She expressed words of gratitude to all who committed their weekends to teaching our youth and offered certificates and gifts. Delicious lunch was served.
May 14 – Part of the Adult Education Program, Mufti Mohammad Farhan offered a series on how we can prepare for Ramadan spiritually and physically.
May 16 – On behalf of ICLI, Br. Imran Zaidi participated in a panel, entitled, “Building Sustainable Wealth Through Our Religious Institutions” at Hofstra University arranged by LI Chamber of Commerce.
May 16 – Sr. Seema Rahman was voted to serve as a member as board of directors for Girls scouts of Nassau County. This seat was previously filled by Sr. Peggy Iamunno, an ICLI member.
May 17 – Dr. Isma H. Chaudhry spoke at Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock regarding the Islamic perspective on mental illnesses and support by the community. This event was arranged by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).
May 18 – ICLI awarded by the LI Council of Churches for contributions made to the local community. Br. Habeeb Ahmed received the award on our behalf.
May 19 – Dr. Isma H. Chaudhry was the moderator and speaker for Women for Healing and Networking Dinner at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Shelter Rock. This program’s intent was to address divisiveness, identify the process for change and to share concerns in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-religion population.
May 19 – Sr. Seemi Ahmed was a panelist and speaker at Rockville Centre Synagogue.
May 19 – Moving up for ICLI Girls Scouts. Alhamdulilah one senior girl scout received the Gold Award. ICLI Girls scouts now has 41 scouts and 11 leaders under the leadership of Seema Rahman and Safeta Pejcinovic.
